MAHASHIVARATRI

 MAHASHIVARATRI

Maha Shivaratri
1st March 2022 is Mahashivarathri.

Maha shivaratri is predominantly a Hindu festival, celebrated annually in honour of Shiva, the God of destruction. Shivaratri is celebrated in every month of the luni-solar calendar, in accordance of the hindu calendar but once in  year in late winter Mahashivaratri is celebrated to commemorate the oncoming summer.

Of the twelve Shivathris observed  in any given year , Mahashivaratri is considered especially auspicious. Shivaratri is supposed to be the night of convergence of Shiva and Shakthi, which in essence mean the masculine and feminine energies that balance the world. In Hindu culture, this is a solemn festival that marks the remembrance of 'overcoming darkness and ignorance in life'. On this day devotees do fasting, rudrabhishek, and worship lord Shiva by bhajans throughout the night (sleepless) to seek his blessings.
It is celebrated as an Anniversary of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.
It is also celebrated as a day when Lord Shiva saved the world from the pot of poison  (Haala Hala) by drinking it himself and holding it in his throat.(Thus he came to be known as Neelakantha)
Also this day marks when Brahma and Vishnu got involved in an argument about their supremacy when Lord Shiva subjugated them and proved his infinite supremacy.
He is also known as "Devon ka Dev, Mahadev".

To mark the Shivarathri celebrations, I have made a playlist of Shivastotram rendered by different singers. It consists of 1. Bilwastakam, 2. Lingashtakam, 3. Shiva Panchakshara Stotram,
4. Shivastakam and 5. Dwadasa Jyotirlingas

Play this and listen with devotion
