Wishing you all a Happy and Prosperous and Pleasant NEW YEAR.

Let us continue with old Hindi movie songs. Today you will listen to Songs of Naushad’s Musical

hit film “ BAIJU BAWRA” of (1952)

Baiju Bawra (lit. 'Crazy Baiju') is a 1952 Hindi musical romantic drama film directed by Vijay Bhatt. Produced by Prakash Pictures, with story by Ramchandra Thakur and dialogues by Zia Sarhadi,

Baiju Bawra was a musical "megahit" which had a mighty run of 100 weeks in the theatres.

Bhatt's decision to make a film based on classical music was met with skepticism by the Indian film industry due to its "lack of mass appeal",

but the film and music turned out be an "overwhelming success".

The film's music director was Naushad, who had become popular giving folk-based music in films such as Rattan, Anmol Ghadi, Shahjehan (1946) and Deedar (1951). With Bhatt's Baiju Bawra, Naushad introduced a classical component in Hindi film songs.

The soundtrack was based on classical ragas such as Puriya Dhanashree, Todi, Malkauns, Darbari and Desi. The lyricist was Shakeel Badayuni, a Naushad discovery. For Baiju Bawra, he had to forgo Urdu, and write lyrics in pure Hindi, with

songs such as the bhajan "Man Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj", becoming popular.

The film starred Bharat Bhushan as Baiju, with Meena Kumari playing his love interest Gauri. Meena made her acting debut in Bhatt's Leatherface (1939) as a six-year-old. Surendra portrayed Tansen, one of the Navratnas in Akbar's court. Kuldip Kaur played the role of the dacoit queen Roopmati. The rest of the cast included Bipin Gupta, Manmohan Krishna, B. V. Vyas and Baby Tabassum.

The film merges the legend of Baiju Bawra with the historic setting of Mughal Emperor Akbar's court in India. Baiju (Bhushan) is the son of a musician who also grows up to be a musician.

He comes to believe that Tansen, the famed musician at the court of Akbar, is responsible for

his father's death. The movie then follows Baiju's attempt to avenge his father's death by

challenging Tansen to a musical duel.

Even though there were many changes in the storyline from the original life of Baiju Bawra,

the film was both a commercial and critical success and catapulted both its lead actors into

stardom. Meena Kumari became the first-ever Filmfare Best Actress Award winner in 1954, the first of four Best Actress trophies she won in her career. The film's music

director, Naushad, also received the inaugural Filmfare Best Music Director Award for the song "Tu Ganga Ki Mauj"; this was Naushad's first and only Filmfare Award win.

It was ranked #13 in the list of 20 greatest Indian films by BFI in 2002.

Music[edit]

Naushad had come into prominence following his fourth film Station Master (1942), a Bhatt film production

. The box office success of Station Master helped Naushad showcase his talent and

become popular. Naushad at this time was under contract to A. R. Kardar, who had allowed him to score music for other companies.[23]

Bhatt brought in Naushad to give music for Baiju Bawra because of his expertise in classical music.

The two worked together along with Bhatt's older brother Shankar for six months. Shankar was

"opposed" to the idea of a Hindi film filled with ragas as he feared it would drive the audiences

away. But Naushad and Bhatt were adamant to change "public taste" in film music and in

Naushad's words "it worked".[7] Naushad's use of classical music in Baiju Bawra helped it become one of the top ten films of the

1950s and is "remembered mostly for its music".[2] The bandish in raga Desi between Amir Khan and D. V. Paluskar, and Khan's "Tori Jai Jai Kar" in raga Puriya Dhanashree constituted the highlights of the film. However, the solos by Mohammed Rafi "Man Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj" in raga Malkauns, "O Duniya Ke Rakhwale" in raga Darbari, "Tu Ganga Ki Mauj" in raga Bhairavi and "Insaan Bano" in raga Todi are cited as "real treasures".[24] His composition in the film is cited as the first use of the classical medium by Naushad, but he

had based a large number of his songs on Indian rāgas.[25] In Shahjehan (1946) he had composed three classical based tunes for K. L. Saigal. He did the same in

Mela 1948 and Deedar 1951.[24]

SOUND TRACK

The plot centered around music, so it was a necessity that the movie's soundtrack be outstanding.

Renowned Bollywood music director Naushad and lyricist Shakeel Badayuni created memorable songs for the movie, with all but one being based on Hindustani classical melodies (ragas). Esteemed playback singers Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and Shamshad Begum, and renowned classical vocalists Amir Khan and D. V. Paluskar lent their voices to the score.

Amir Khan was a consultant for the music. The result was a critically acclaimed movie soundtrack.

Famous songs from the movie include "O Duniya Ke Rakhwale" (based on Raga Darbari), "Tu Ganga Ki Mauj'' (based on Raga Bhairavi), "Mohe Bhool Gaye Sanwariya" (based on Raga Bhairav with traces of Raga Kalingda), "Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj" (based on Raga Malkauns), "Aaj Gawat Man Mero" (Raga Desi), and Jhoole Mein Pawan Ki Aayi Bahar (based on Raga

Pilu). Naushad won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, his first and only win.

The film also established Mohammad Rafi as a top playback singer in Hindi films, a position he held until his death in 1980. The songs

Rafi sang for the film, including "Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj" and "O Duniya Ke Rakhwale",

went on to become smash hits.

All lyrics are written by Shakeel Badayuni; all music is composed by Naushad.

Good Morning and welcome to My Radio.

Todays Movie under Ek Film Ke Gaane is 1954 Musical film AMAR

Amar (transl. "Immortal") is a 1954 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film produced and directed by Mehboob Khan. Dealing with the controversial subject matter of rape, the film revolves around the titular upper-class lawyer (Dilip Kumar), his feminist fiancé, the social worker Anju Roy (Madhubala), and Sonia (Nimmi), a poor milkmaid.

Amarnath (Dilip Kumar), a well-known lawyer, is known for his sense of justice. One day, he meets Soniya (Nimmi), a milkwoman. She is awed by him and he finds her interesting. Amar's father wants him to get married and sends him Anju's (Madhubala) photograph. Anju has graduated from a foreign University and believes in justice and aiding the poor. Both she and Amar take a liking to each other and they are soon engaged. One night, after attending a local fair, Soniya is attacked by the local ruffian Shankar (Jayant) who wants to possess her at any cost. In a bid to escape him Soniya runs heedlessly into Amar's house as a thunderstorm begins. In the lonely house, Amar ends up raping Soniya. Amar's conscience torments him as he tries to hide his misdeed and proceed with his engagement to Anju. Anju senses something is amiss, but cannot fathom what it is. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Soniya is pregnant. She refuses to name the father of her child and is cast out by the villagers as a fallen woman. Shankar manages to figure out who the father of Soniya's child is and wants to avenge her. He ends up dying by his own hands. Amar is accused of murdering him and the truth regarding him and Soniya comes out. The villagers eventually want to lynch Soniya. Anju supports and protects her. In the end, she ensures that Amar officially marries Soniya and leaves the village once her duty is done

Amar was released on 10 September 1954 to positive reviews. Baburao Patel, the editor of Filmindia, called it "a brilliant picture with a gripping human story superbly directed and acted with flawless perfection. A masterpiece of film craft." Swatantrata magazine was highly impressed by Khan's direction and commented that " Mehboob can really be proud of this achievement."  The magazine also defended Kumar's anti-hero role, quoting Jawaharlal Nehru as "films must amuse and at the same time educate."  Deepak Mahaan of The Hindu lauded the film for its characterization of strong female protagonists and photography of rape scenes without any nudity.  Mahaan added: "The black and white canvas lent the story a quiet dignity, appropriate to the ethical tussle between truth and desire, moral turpitude and justice."  In a retrospective review, Khalid Mohammed noted that the protagonists were not portrayed as "snow-white paragons of virtue" but are instead shown with "human weaknesses", which is a rarity in Indian cinema. Also, Amar is stated to be Khan's most favorite film.  In 2019, Rachit Gupta of Filmfare mentioned Madhubala's portrayal of Anju among her finest performances. Actor Naseeruddin Shah called Dilip Kumar's performance in Amar as one of his favorites

Good Morning and Welcome to my Radio and welcome to listen to your favorite songs of the

film ‘MADHUMATI".

Madhumati is a 1958 Indian Hindi-language paranormal romance film directed and produced by Bimal Roy, and written by Ritwik Ghatak and Rajinder Singh Bedi. The film stars Vyjayanthimala and Dilip Kumar in lead roles, with Pran and Johnny Walker in supporting roles. The plot focuses on Anand, a modern man who falls in love with a tribal

woman named Madhumati. But they face challenges in their relationship finally leading to a

paranormal consequence. It was ranked 11th in the Outlook Magazine's 25 leading Indian directors' poll for selecting Bollywood's greatest films in 2003.

Madhumati was filmed in various Indian locations, including Ranikhet, Ghorakhal, Vaitarna Dam and Aarey Milk Colony. The soundtrack album was composed by Salil Chowdhury and the lyrics were written by Shailendra. The film was released on 12 September 1958. It earned ₹40 million in India and became the

highest-grossing Indian filmof the year, and one of the most commercially successful and influential Indian films of all time.

Madhumati was one of the earliest films to deal with reincarnation, and was described by analysts as a potboiler that has a gothic and noir feel to it. It inspired later regional and international films that have reincarnation-based themes.

It led the 6th Filmfare Awards with 12 nominations, and won 9 awards including Best Film, Best Director for Bimal Roy, Best Music Director for Salil Chaudhary, Best Female Playback Singer for Lata Mangeshkar—the most awards for a film at that time—a record that it maintained for

record 37 years. It also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Music

The Madhumati soundtrack features 11 songs composed by Salil Chowdhury. Shailendra wrote the lyrics and Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi, Mubarak Begum,

Asha Bhosle, Sabita Chowdhury, Ghulam Mohammed and Dwijen Mukhopadhyay provided the

vocals. The soundtrack of Madhumati became the best-selling Hindi film soundtrack of 1958. Salil Chowdhury won his first Filmfare

Award for Best Music Director. Suhana Safar Aur Yeh Mausam Haseen is one of the most popular songs by recording artist Mukesh. Filmfare started giving the best

playback singer award in this year and Lata Mangeshka won this award for the song "Aaja re Pardesi". She thus became the first singer ever to win the

Filmfare award for a playback singer since, in the beginning, there was only one award given to a playback singer, male and female singers included.

All lyrics are written by Shailendra; all music is composed by Salil Chowdhury.

The film stars Raj Kapoor, Vyjayanthimala and Rajendra Kumar in the lead roles, with Iftekhar, Raj Mehra, Nana Palsikar, Lalita Pawar, Achala Sachdev and Hari Shivdasani appearing in supporting roles. It was the first Indian film to be exclusively shot abroad and was also among the most expensive films of its

time with the longest runtime for an Indian film up to that time. All this immensely contributed to the commercial success of the

film.

Internationally the film was released in the Soviet Union in 1964 and Turkey in 1968, as well as Bulgaria, Greece and Hungary. Director Dasari Narayana Rao remade the film in Telugu and Kannada languages as Swapna (1981). The film also remade in Turkish as Arkadaşımın Aşkısın (1968)

Soundtrack

The music for this film was composed by Shankar Jaikishan, while the songs were written by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri. The soundtrack was listed by Planet Bollywood as number 8 on their list of 100

Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks. Vyjayantimala made her debut as a singer by

beautifully humming to the tunes of "Yeh Mera Prem Patra", along with

Mohammed Rafi.

The song 'Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega' was envisioned as a song sung by Lata

Good Morning and Welcome to My Radio.

Today you are going to listen to the Songs of the film DO BIGHA ZAMEEN (1953).

Do Bigha Zamin (lit. 'Two bighas of land') is a 1953 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Bimal Roy. Based on Rabindranath Tagore's Bengali poem "Dui Bigha Jomi", the film stars Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy in lead roles. Known for its socialist theme, it is considered an important film in the early parallel cinema of India, and a trend setter.

Inspired by Italian neorealist cinema, Bimal Roy made Do Bigha Zameen after watching Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves (1948). Like most of Bimal Roy's movies, art and commercial cinema merge to create a movie that is still viewed as a benchmark. It has paved the way for future cinema makers in the Indian neorealist movement  and the Indian New Wave, which began in the 1950s.

The film also marks Meena Kumari's maiden guest appearance in her 33-year-long career. The lullaby, Aaja Ri Aa is picturised on her.

In 1952, at the first International Film Festival in Mumbai, director Bimal Roy saw Vittorio De Sica's 1948 Italian film Bicycle Thieves . In the train while he was returning home, he decided to make his next film as real as the film and shot on location. His wife, Manobina Roy, recalled her excited husband instructing his unit to come up with a story right after the screening. The film was based on Rickshawala, a short story written by composer Salil Chowdhury. It revolved around a farmer who desperately pounds the streets of Kolkata to earn the Rs 235 needed to save his two acres of land, only to lose it to the industrialisation. Chowdhury agreed to Roy taking his idea, but on the condition that he would score the music.

A moderate commercial success, it was awarded the All India Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film, it became the first film to win the Filmfare Best Movie Award and the first Indian film to win the International Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, after Neecha Nagar (1946), which won the Palme d'Or (Grand Prize). It was also winner of the Social Progress Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. In 2005, Indiatimes Movies ranked the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. The film was also released in China and in USSR.

SOUNDTRACK :

The music for the film was composed by Salil Chowdhury, with lyrics written by Shailendra. In an interview with All India Radio, Chowdhury described the tune for "Apni Kahani Chhod Ja – Dharti kahe pukaar ke" having been inspired by a Red Army march song as well as influenced by Bhairavi (hence the added stanza and Aalap at the beginning of the song), thus giving it a Komal Gandhara (Ga) lilt to make it softer.

The film, which is based on Bimal Mitra's Bengali-language novel Saheb Bibi Golam (1953), is set in the 19th century during the British Raj and focuses on Bhoothnath (Guru Dutt), who meets Chhoti Bahu (Meena Kumari), the

alcohol, leading both of them into bankruptcy.

ANARKALI is a 1953 Indian historical drama film directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal, and written by Nasir Hussain and Hameed Butt, based on the historical legend of the Mughal  emperor Jahangir (Saleem). As per the legend , Jahangir revolted against his father Akbar over his love for a common girl named Anarkali. The film was produced by Filmistan Ltd. The lead cast of the film were Pradeep Kumar, Bina Rai, Kuldeep Kaur, Mubarak. The Music was scored by C. Ramachandra, Vasant Prakash.

The composer Vasant Prakash was initially appointed as the music director of this film, but fell out with the film producer S. Mukherji after having recorded just one song with Geeta Dutt. Ramachandra took over the project, and insisted that not only that all the female songs be sung by Lata Mangeshkar, but that the Geeta Dutt number be removed from the film. Although the Filmistan group agreed, Geeta's song stayed in the movie, the famous ‘Aa Jaan-e-wafa.’

TRIVIA:

ANARKALI - This picture was released in 1953, when I was studying SSLC ( 11th class)

I was in Hospet then. The songs were very popular (C. Ramachandra's music). In 1954, after the exams we moved to Sandur, to which place my father was transferred. I was expecting my results and after that I have to  move for college. It was summer holidays for all schools. We had a good time at Sandur, which was a nice place. As we were enjoying holidays ( no school, no books, no homework), we used to go to play and explore the surrounding places. My brother Sridhar had a lot of interest in this activity and we used to walk miles around to cover all areas. There was an old, dilapidated fort nearby and we used to go there in the evenings, sit there till dusk and come back. Sandur is a small town and has only one theater and one flour mill. The flour mill was working with the power generated by  a diesel engine. To attract people and to let people know that the flour mill is running, they fixed an empty bottle at the end of the exhaust pipe. When the engine is on, it would make a sound ‘chuk, chuk, chuk, chuk ‘, which could be heard from anywhere in the town, alerting the ladies  that the mill is on. Similarly the theater. Before the start of the show , one hour early,  they used to play songs on the loudspeaker so that everyone could know that it was time for the beginning of the show. As Anarkali was a new release, the theater had records of Lata's songs of that movie and invariably they were playing it daily on the loudspeaker. As it used to be evening time ( our time to be near the fort) we used to hear the songs sitting over the rocks in the fort. After the songs stopped, we used to come back home. It used to be our routine. The time (evening), the weather( cool) , the surroundings (calm and serene), and the melodious voice of the singer (Lata Mangeshkar), the sound (clear and perfect) - all these provided an excellent atmosphere for us to  enjoy. This has left an indelible impression on me.

If I hear the name of the picture (Anarkali) , or hear the songs of picture in any media, it immediately takes me to the past and reminds me of the above situation and a sense of happiness envelopes me.

Perhaps William Wordsworth might have faced a similar situation and wrote in his poem "The Solitary Reaper" as under...

Behold her, singing in the field,

Yon solitary highland lass !

Reaping and singing by herself ;

Stop here, or gently pass !

Alone she cuts and binds the grain,

And sings a melancholy strain;

O listen ! For the vale profound

Is overflowing with the sound.

............... (and concludes)

The music in my heart I bore,

Long after it was heard no more.

My eldest sister, Smt. B. Hanuma Bai was singing the Song, Dheere se Aaaja re Akhiyan me, which was liked by everyone in the family especially my father, and she has sung it several times on his request. My sister was a good singer.

Whenever I don’t get sleep at night, I play this song on my music player, and I am not exaggerating, but I do get sleep immediately. That is the wonder of Lata’s voice.

This particular song was so popular that it became a regular household lullaby.

TRIVIA

I was  a boy of 12 years studying 8th standard and moved to Hadagali after the final exams. My father had got a transfer from Harapanahalli, as Tahsildar. At that time my elder brother Ramamurthy was working in Ooty in the R&B  department of Madras State. As it was summer time and all were having holidays, he invited all of us to visit Ooty.  My father agreed and we all went to Ooty.

My brother had a bungalow as his quarters allotted by the Govt. It was an independent house.  Ooty is a hill station with hills and hillocks all along and houses were constructed on terraces made on these slopes. From one house you can see another house down below. So, from his house we could see clearly down below another bungalow, which belonged to Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer (A noted high court lawyer of Madras). It was his summer resort. The House was  named “Delisle '', pronounced as ‘delile’. So my brother’s quarters was named as “Delisle View’.

It was the year 1951 and the movie Awara was released. Its songs were very popular. My brother had a Philips Radio, and all were listening to the songs. Whenever the ‘Awara Hoon” song was played, Sridhar and I used to surround the radio to listen to the song. We both were very fond of the song and the movie. In Ooty there was a movie theater named ‘Assembly Rooms’ , which displayed a poster of Awara under “Coming”. The theater was located on Garden Road, which is about 1 km away from our house.(Our house was near the Public Garden also known as the Botanical Garden). Almost daily we used to go to the theater to see whether the movie had come. To our disappointment it never came until we left Ooty (1 month period). Whenever I see or hear about ‘Awara”, it reminds me of the above  incident. (Sridhar and I run up and down to the theater daily ).

Jaal (lit. ‘The Trap’) is a 1952 Hindi crime noir film.  The film stars Dev Anand, Geeta Bali in lead roles. Its  music was composed by S.D.Burman and lyrics written by Sahir Ludhianvi. Dev Anand portrayed  an Anti Hero character in the lead. His performance is regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s greatest Anti Heroes.

Music : S.D.Burman’s musical score is excellent, especially the song “Yeh Raat Yeh Chandini phir kahan’ sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar was very popular then and even today.

TRIVIA

  • Though in public opinion, the song ‘Yeh Raat Yeh Chandini Phir Kahan”  sung by Hemant Kumar as solo and as duet with Lata Mangeshkar shown popularity and often played by  Radio Stations during the period of its release ( of course I too Like it), but the Song “ Pighla Hai Sona Door Gagan Par” was my favorite, which was  picturised on Geeta Bali., with the Sea background.

  • The song should be listened several times concentrating on different aspects each time

  1. The Lyrics : This song's lyrics were  penned by the great poet, Sahir Ludhianvi . The poet explains the beauty of God’s creation, particularly the golden splash in the distant sky in the early morning or in the evening. He wonders at the cute and beautiful colors in different designs showing the virtues and likes of every male and female. He also speaks of some silent differences in the hindsight where sorrow and misery stand like a tree bending its head. He also explains the beautiful aspects of the sky and earth like flying clouds, turning streams , peaks of mountains etc.

  2. The Music Composer’s Tune . The tune of the song was set by the film's composer and Music Director, Sachin Dev Burman, who was known as a melody maker.

  3. The singer : The song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar, who is known as the Nightingale of India and also Bharat Ratna. She was an accomplished singer and never went out of tune at any time.  One feels like listening to her songs again and again.

  • The only unfortunate aspect is - the film was produced in the black and white era of Indian Cinema, and the song and the shots taken do not match, as the shots lack color to match the song.

Later Saregama consolidated and published annual lists from 1953 to 1983, taking the average of performance. During the year of release of Nagin (1954), three songs from it viz., "Man dole mera tan dole"; "Jadugar Saiya",  "Mera Dil yeh pukare Aaja", - found place in the annual list and  'Man dole' occupied the second place. And they continued in the list for 1955 also.( no song has performed likewise for two consecutive years) (as per Saregama list.)

  • In the year of its release, we were in Sadur, and often listening to Nagin songs on the radio. It reminds me of those days.

  • Later In 1957 I was in Siruguppa, after Intermediate, I had access to Harmonium from our neighbor, when I learnt to play Nagin Been Tune. As our house was situated in the outskirts of the town, my mother was chiding me not to play that tune as it may attract snakes.  :)

TRIVIA

Ganga Maili Hogayi (How?)

“The Ganga, especially, is the river of India, beloved of her people, around which are intertwined her memories, her hopes and fears, her songs of triumph, her victories and her defeats. She has been a symbol of India’s agelong culture and civilization, ever changing, ever flowing, and yet ever the same Ganga.”

                                                                                            —  Jawahalal Nehru

Ganga and its tributaries

Ganga’s course from the place of its origin in Himalayas till it reaches the Bay of Bengal near Ganga sagar in West Bengal is 2525 Kms.

Ganga is the national river of India. Ganga is India’s largest river basin. It covers 26 percent of the country's land mass and supports 43 percent of its population.

From the place of its origin upto Haridwar, the water is clear and potable. Later in the downstream it  passes through 29 cities with a population of more than 1 lakh, 23 cities with a population of 50,000 - 1,00,000 and 48 towns.

Pollution of Ganga ;

The Ganges is threatened by severe pollution through human activity. It poses a danger not only to humans but also to animals and birds. (The answer to the question “How”) The untreated sewage dumped into the river, industrial waste, agricultural runoff, remnants of partially  burned or unburned bodies from funeral pyres and animal carcasses all contribute to the pollution of ganges. The levels of fecal coliform bacteria from human waste in the river near Varanasi are more than a hundred times the Indian Government's official limit. Pollution of Ganga has become so serious that bathing in and drinking its water has become very dangerous.

  • The major polluting industry along the Ganges is the leather industry, especially near Kanpur, from which chromium  and other chemicals leak into the river.

  • Another huge source of pollution is that of nearly 1 billion liters of mostly untreated raw sewage that enters the rivers everyday.

  • Inadequate cremation procedures result in partially burnt or unburnt corpses floating in the river. In Varanasi alone, an estimated forty thousand bodies are cremated every year and deposited into the Ganga.

The book by Keki N. Daruwala of Penguin India publication - ‘ Collected poems (1970-2005)’ , in the poem “Boat ride along the Ganga” casts awry look at the contradictions that abound in the life of a Hindu :

  • What plane of destiny have I arrived at

Where corpse-fires and cooking fires burn side by side ?)

Pollution Control ;

Ganga Action Plan (GAP) was initiate in 1985. GAP Phase 1 came into full force after it was launched on 14th January 1986 by Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime minister of India, covering 25 class 1 cities and nearly 350 crores. Gap Phase 2 came into action  in 1993 with a budget of 1498 . Its main objective was to improve the water and its  quality by interception, diversion and treatment of domestic sewage and prevent toxic and industrial chemical waste from identified polluting units from the river. The ultimate objective of the GAP is to have an approach of integrated river basin management considering the various dynamic interactions between abiotic and biotic ecosystems. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal were the states involved in the GAP.

Later in 2014 the name of the programme was changed  to Namami Gange by the present government and with a budget of Rs 20,000 crores, It is an Integrated Conservation Mission approved a ‘Flagship Programme has made significant progress in the cleaning and transformation of river Ganga and its tributaries. The main pillars of Namami Gange Programme are - Sewage Treatment Infrastructure; River- front development; River-Surface Cleaning ; Biodiversity Conservation ; Afforestation; Public Awareness and Industrial Effluent Monitoring . It was reported recently in Parliament that ‘Water in River Ganga is now good for bathing as quality improves after Namami Gange drive.”

While the problems are numerous, they are not insurmountable. As the problems are created by humanity, they thus can be remedied by humanity, if the will and focus is there.

Raj Kapoor’s Ganga :

So this is in brief about the fate of Ganga, the sacred river of India. Raj Kapoor’s Ganga is not the river but a simple and pure lady of the hills living on the banks of the River Ganga in the Himalayan Range. He explains and depicts the fate of this lady, who by circumstances beyond her control is separated from her husband and goes in search of him with her recently born child to Calcutta. The movie's story tells about her plight during her journey and how she is exploited by men.

It is Raj Kapoor’s ingenuity in story telling and also bringing out the social problem. Very nicely picturised. The fate of the sacred river Ganga and Raj Kapoor’s Ganga are the same. River Ganga is converted into a menial to carry filth created by human (a scavenger) and to carry carcasses of animals corpses of humans and Raj Kapoors lady was converted into a prostitute. ( Dono mein antar kya hai, bolo).

'Social gathering' days of the college, which used to get applause

TRIVIA

The year 1957, when I was to join the Agriculture college at Dharwar. The fact is, I never applied for a seat in Dharwar college, but applied to only Bapatla (A.P.) and waited for a call. I was at Siruguppa then. My brother in law, Sri Seshachalam, who was HeadMaster at Hospet took his cousin B.R. Bhaskar to Dharwar for admission in Agriculture college, where it was going on in full swing. After admitting him, he returned to Hospet, and came to know about my waiting still for the same course a call from Bapatla. He gave a telegram to my father to send me immediately to Hospet with all my certificates. Accordingly I went to Hospet and with my Brother-in-law traveled to Dharwar. But to my bad luck the admissions were closed and my brother-in-law had to plead with the Principal for a seat. It took three days for us to wait and request him for a seat repeatedly. Finally the principal yielded and offered me a seat. The perseverance of my brother-in -law yielded the fruit. (Later after a month I got a letter from Bapatla offering me a seat, but it was too late, and I continued at Dharwar)

The three days of waiting at Dharwar was too long, and at that time, Paying Guest movie was running in a theater. My brother-in-law took me to that movie . That is how I still remember that movie, the first  one in Dharwar and with my brother-in-law. The songs of the movie were already very popular among students in my college and I was hearing them humming. I liked them too.

This incident, that is the tactics used by my brother-in-law (who befriended the principal,  talking and praising him whenever he moved out of his office in the evening and even taking a photo of him - until he succeeded) - is praiseworthy showing his situation handling technique. This remains as a sweet memory for me, which shaped my career.  Whenever I hear a song from this film, I remember this incident. Sweet memories always keep our spirits high .

EK SHIRSHAK KE GAANE: Nain /Aankh / Nazar etc.

Earlier I had posted songs on the topic " Chand / Chandini "in several parts. My nephew , Mr Girishchandra asked me whether I have made any songs list on
" Nayana". ( for, his daughter's name is Nayana). Immediately I posted some songs which I could recollect on the topic in our whatsapp group. It was taken well by our group members and each started posting songs, which they could recollect. This encouraged me and I started thinking about it and instead of one word Nayan, why I should not expand its scope by also adding similar meaning words (Synonyms) and other related words. Thus I have made this page under the title " Ek Shirshak ke Gaane" and the shirshak is "Nain / Aankh / Nazar etc " and made several playlists adding youtube song clips and presented here in several parts with their links.

BADALTE HUE SAATHI

During my high school and early college days (1950s), our sole entertainment for music was Radio and Radio Ceylon (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation). They were broadcasting mostly Hindi Film music. To make the contents more interesting, they used to name different programmes of 1/2 hr duration into several varieties like Aap ki pharmaish, purane filmon ke geet, ek hi gayak ke geet, yugal geet, Ek aur Anek, Badalte hue Saathi, Ek hi film ke geet and so on. Thereby people get glued to their favourite programmes.

Today, as I was browsing my collection of Hindi songs , and recollecting the old days., an idea struck me, and wanted to try the BADALTE HUE SAATHI programme and made a list of songs and arranged them. For me it has come nicely and wanted to share it with you. I have divided them into different parts of 10 songs each (only audio, no video) i.e. half an hour listening, which I feel is not a long duration as you regularly do while listening to a radio.

All songs are duets, sung by our renowned singers. For eg. 1st song is of Rafi and Lata, in the next song Rafi is replaced by another singer and it goes on like that, changing the partner.

All songs are of the Golden period of Hindi songs (50s, 60s,70s).
