TALAT MAHMOOD

Talat Mahmood (Born 24th Feb.1924 - Died 9th May, 1998) was an Indian playback Singer who is considered as one of the popular male Indian film songs and Ghazal singers. Although he tried his luck as a film actor, he did not succeed a great deal in acting. He was very active in 1950s and early 1960s and has very notable films to his credit.
Talat was born in Lucknow . Talat's family was rather conservative and music was certainly not encouraged. However, the young Talat took a liking to music very early on. Talat's music career was marked by a steady rise. In 1936 when he was 16 years old he began to sing ghazals on All India Radio. In 1946 HMV contracted him to sing his first disc. Through HMV he was brought to National Attention. Then he moved to Calcutta and from there in 1949 he moved to Bombay and began to work in Film Industy and got a big name as a Bollywood Playback Singer.
Talat was known for his unique style of singing. He had a characteristic quiver in his voice that was unique. Initially many music directors saw this as a flaw, but it was Anil Biswas who saw this as a characteristic that had potential. He encouraged Talat to develop this and it ultimately became his trademark for an emotive rendition of a song. His voice came to be known as velvet, smooth, silken and petal soft. Talat has produced some of Boywood's most treasured songs. This accomplishment has earned him a place in our hearts and souls for all time to come.
Along with his voice, his exceptionally good looks helped him to get lead roles in films like Lala Rukh, Sone ki Chidiya, Dil-e-Nadan, Dak Babu, Raftaar, Ek Gaon ki Kahani, Waris, Maalik and many more. But his celluloid roles did not augment his status, his singing certainly lent him an enduring glory. As the synthetic sounds of electronic instruments started dominating film music, the soft, pure notes of handsome singer receded into the background.
Talat has titles like The King of Ghazals, also Shahenshah-e-Ghazal. He received the Padma Bhushan Award in 1992, in recognition of his artistic contributions in the spheres of cinematic and ghazal music.
India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of him in 2016.
