GHULAM MOHAMMAD
Ghulam Mohammad (Born 1903 and died 17th March 1968) was an Indian Film score composer, who is most remembered for his work in Hindi musical hit films - Mirza Ghalib (1954), Shama (1968) and Pakeezah (1972). He received National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the film Mirza Ghalib.
Ghulam Mohammad was born in Bikaner, Rajasthan into a family of Musicians. In 1924 he moved to Bombay and after a struggle for 8 years he got a chance in film music
He was an assistant to Naushad and worked for the renowned music Director Anil Biswas. Later he started composing music independently.
He received National Film award for best music Direction for the film Mirza Ghalib (1954). The shooting of his last film, Pakeezah, was held up for many years due to marital and personal problems between the film producer Kamal Amrohi and the film's lead actress Meena Kumari, and the film was finally released only after Ghulam Mohammad's death.
He composed music for several films and to mention a few like - Grihasthi 1948), Kaajal (1948), Paras (1949), Shaayar(1949), Haste Ansoo (1950), Pardesh (1950), Azeeb Ladki (1952), Amber (1952), Dil-e-Nadan (1953),Laila Majnu (1953), Rail Ka Dibba (1953), Mirza Ghalb (1954), Kundan (1955), Sitara (1955), Maalik (1958), Shama (1961) and Pakeezah(1972)
Besides the National Award in 1955 , he also got HMV Saregama Gold Disc Award in 1972.
Yesterday 17 th March was his Death Anniversary Day and Vividh Bharathi broadcasted a special programme on him in their ' Aaj la Fankar ' programme. This was followed by 'Chaya Geet' and ' Aaj bhi Kal Bhi' programmes where only Ghulam Mohammad's songs were there.
