AMARA SILPI JAKKANNA (1964)


Amara Silpi Jakkanna is a 1964 Telugu Language Biographical film produced and directed by veteran B.S.Ranga under the Vikram Studios banner. It stars Akkineni Nageswara Rao, B. Saroja Devi in the lead roles. The music was composed by S. Rajeswara Rao and the lyrics were written by Samudrala Raghavacharya, C.Narayana Reddy, Dasaradhi and Kosaraju.Dialogues for the film was written by Samudrala Raghavacharya. Playback singers were Ghantasala, P.Suseela, Madhavapeddi Satyam, Vasanta, Swarnalata and Padma. ANR enacted the role of Amara Silpi Jakkanna, known for sculpting Kalyani Chalukyas and Hoysalas. This film was the first Eastman colour production of Telugu Cinema. The movie is a remake of director's own kannada movie ' Amara Silpi Jakanachari'.
The cast include ANR ( as Jakkanna), B.Saroja Devi (as Manjari), Chittoor Nagaiah (as Mallanna), Haranath (as Dankanna), Uday Kumar (as Gopadevudu), Dhulipala (as Ramanujacharya ), Relangi (as Sundaram), A.V.SubbaRao (as Vishnuvardhanudu), Suryakantam (as Rajamma), Girija (as Gangu), Pushpavalli (as Shantala), Jayalalitha ( as Dancer).

ABOUT AMARA SILPI JAKANACHARI:
Amara Silpi Jakanachari was an Indian legendary sculptor credited with building many fine temples for the Kalyani Chlukyas and Hoysalas.Jakanachari was born in a small village called Kaidala, 9 km from Tumkur, karnataka. The original name of the village was Kridapura. His life was one of love and dedication to art. His career began when Nripa Haya ruled as local a chieftain of the area. He left home shortly after his marriage seeking fame in his field of work. He travelled far and wide building many temples and became so engrossed in his work that he forgot all about his wife.
JAKANACHARI AND HIS SON:
Jakanachari's wife gave birth to his child , named Dankanachari .Dankanachari himself grew up to become a great sculptor and set out to find his father. At Belur he found a job as a sculptor and noticed a flaw in a figure sculpted by the great Jakanachari himself. Dankanachari told Jakanachari that the stone which he was carving has a toad living inside which was considered to be a flaw by the sculptors. Furious at this, Jakanachari challenged to cut off his right hand if the young sculptor was correct in his assessment of his sculpture. Dankanachari chiselled the place where the flaw was present and a toad jumped out with a little water flowing from that spot. Upon testing the figure, the flaw was indeed revealed and Jakkanachari kept his promise and cut off his right hand. Eventually the two sculptors become aware of their relationship as father and son.

CHENNAKESAVA TEMPLE:
Subsequently, Jakkanachari received a vision to build the Chennakesava temple in his native place Kridapura. After this was completed, legend has it that God restored his right hand. In celebrating this incident, Kritapura was henceforth called Kaidala. The term 'Kai' in Kannada means 'Hand'.

The Hoysala emblem at the Chennakeshava temple in Belur depicts the fight between the mythical Sala and a tiger, the emblem of the Cholas. Historians and scholars believe it represents King Vishnuvardhana’s victory over the Cholas at Talakad.
