SEETA KALYANAM (1976)


Seeta Kalyanam is a 1976 Indian Telugu language epic mythological musical/drama film directed by Bapu from a screen play written by Mullapudi Venkata Ramana. The ensemble cast film deals with the wedding of Seeta and Rama , who is the 7th incarnation of Vishnu and covers the Balakanda of Ramayana. The film is produced by Pinjala Ananda Rao and P.Subba Rao under the banner Ananda Lakshmi Art Movies and directed by Bapu. It has star cast of Ravi Kumar ( as Rama) , Jayaprada (as Seeta), Gumnadi (as Dasaratha), Kanta Rao (as Narada), Mukkamala (as Viswamitra), Satyanarayana (as Ravana), Dhulipala (as Vasista), Tyagaraju (as Parasurama), Mikkilineni (as Janaka), Bheemaraju (as Bali Chakraavarthy), P.J.Sharma (as Shukracharya, Hemalata (as Kausalya), Jamuna (as Kaikeyi), P.R.Varalakshmi (as Sumitra), Mamata (as Mandodari).
The music is composed by K.V. Mahadevan with lyrics written by Thyaraju Swamy , Bhakta Ramadasu, Arudra, and C.Narayana Reddy. Playback singers were P. SUSEELA, S.P. Balasubramanyam, V.Ramakrishna, Vasanta, and P.B.Srinivas. The film was released in Hindi with the title Seeta Swayamvar and in Malayalam as Seeta Swayamvaram.
The film has garnered the Filmfare Award for Best Direction (Telugu) (1976) - Bapu
Filmfare special award for excellent performance (1976) - Gummadi.
The Film was screened at BFI London Film Festival; Chicago International Film Festival, San Reno and Denver International film festivals in 1978. And it is part of the course work at the British Film Institute.

A NOTE ABOUT BAPU:
Sattiraju Lakshminarayana,(born on 15th Dec. 1933 In Narasapuram and died on 31st August, 2014 , Chennai), known professionally as Bapu, was an Indian Film Director, Painter, Illustrator, Cartoonist, screen writer, music artist, and designer known for his works in Telugu Cinema and bollywood.He was born in Narsapuram , which is in present day West Gidavari District of Andhra Pradesh.He has worked as a political cartoonist for the news paper Andhra Patrika in 1945. He holds B.com (1945) and B.L.(1945) from Madras University.
PAINTINGS:
Bapu's paintings focuses Hindu Mythology in characters and he has painted the Hindu epic Ramayana as a pictorial story. His character portrayals, such as Shiva, Bhima and Duryodhana look distinctly male with wide chests, large jaws, and large biceps, while Krishna and Rama are more feminine in built.His paintings are decorated the cover pages of many magazines in India and abroad. Telugu Naadi magazine published from USA for Telugu audiencehave published Bapu's great paintings. Bapu also later served on their advisory board to guide and have an outstanding content for the magazine to cater to Telugu people.
ASSOCIATION WITH RAMANA:
Bapu's family was staying in Madrasand in 1942, when Japanesecbombed Madrs, there was a panic exodus and Bapu's family moved to Narasapuram andstayed there till 1945, when 3bd world war ended. Bapu studied in Taylor High school, Narasaouram during these years. MullapudiVenkataramana's father was working as sub-registrar was posted atNarasapuramduring 1942-45 and so Venkataramana also studied in Taylor High School, Narasapuram during those years. They were classmates and that is how their association started. They continued their schooling at Jesari High school, Madras. Ramana's first short story 'Amma maata Vinakapote' was published in 1945 in 'Bala', a children's magazine published by radio Annayya (Nyayapathi Raghava Rao), he was 14 then. Bapu illustrated the story. That was the beginning of their career as a "writer- producer - illustrator- film maker duo". Started as an illustrator-story writer team and then turning into film director - writer duo, they have contributed immensely to the enrichment of Telugù cultural ethics through literature and cinema. When one mentions Bapu, one is bound to mention Ramana's name too and vice versa.The most notable achievement in his movie making is his success in capturing the nativity of Telugu people and translating it to on-screen visuals. Ventures like Sampoirna Ramayanam(1971), Ramanjaneya yuddham (1974), and Seeta Kalyanam (1976) have been milestones of Telugu cinema, while historical films like Thyagayya (1981), Bhakta Kannappa (1976), and Sreenatha Kavi Sarvabhowmudu (1993) have been hugely successful.Bapu -Ramana combination has created movie magic on the large screen with some of the pathbreaking films in Telugu cinema and are ever remembered for films like Radha Kalyanam (1981), Muthyala Muggu (1975), Sakshi (1967), Mr Pellam (1993), Pelli Pustakam (1991), The duo directed Mana Voori Pandavulu (1978), which won Filmfare Award for Best Film(Telugu).
