DR. CHAKRAVARTHY (1964)


Dr. Chakravarthy is 1964 Telugu language Drama film produced by D. Madhusudan Raò under Annapoorna Pictures banner and directed by Adurti Subba Rao. It stars Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Savitri, Jaggaiah and Sowkar Janaki in the lead roles and the music is composed by Saluri Rajeswara Rao. The story of the film is based on the novel "Chakrabramanam" written by Koduri Kausalya Devi. The script was written by 24 years old young literary talent , Gollapudi Maruthi Rao. It was his first movie as a dialogue writer. The music for the film was composed by Saluri Rajeswara Rao and lyrics were written by Athreya, Arudra, Sri Sri, Dasarathi and Kosaraju. The playback singers were Ghantasala P.Suseela, S. Janaki P.B. Srinivas, Madhavapeddi Satyam and Vasanta. All the songs were well received and were very popular.
Going to the story, Dr Chakravarthy arrives in the City after completing his higher studies in medicine to marry his lady love Sridevi(Krishnana kumari) who is also a doctor.He has a sister Sudha (Geethanjali)
Since Sudha and Chakravathy have lost their parents at a very young age, both grew up sharing amicable bonding. When Chakravarthy arrives in his home town to see his doting sister, he is shell-shocked to know that his sister is suffering from a dreadful disease, Cancer. As a dying wish ,Sudha pleads her brother to marry her sister-in-law Nirmala ( Sowkar Janaki) in return to the love and respect that her husband showed towards them. Chakravarthy would not have enough time to explain to his sister about his lady love. As per his sister's last wish Chakravarthy marries Nirmala. He conveys the same to Sridevi and how he had to fulfill her vow. Sridevi gets back to profession practicing medicine and Chakravarthy builds a hospital in memory of his sister and serves people. Life becomes mechanical to Chakravarthy as there seems to be nothing in common between the couple. The story takes a turn when he meets his friend Ravindra (Jaggaiah) and the latter's wife Madhavi (Savitri).There are several twists and turns as the both the couples go through different emotions and misunderstandings and at the end everything is cleared and closes in a happy mood.
The film was recorded as an industry hit at the box office. It is the first film to win the Nandi Award, instituted by the Govt. Of Andhra Pradesh in 1964. The film has also won the National film award for Best Feature film in Telugu (1964).
Koduru Kausalya Devi was a famous Story and Novel Writer. At the age of 19, she wrote the novel "Chakrabramanam " in 1961. She submitted the same for the Novel writing Competition conducted by Andhra Prabha weekly. It won First Prize. The same novel was filmed as 'Dr. Chakravarthi' by Annapurna Pictures. Her other novels viz., Prem Nagar, Chakravakam, Shankutirtam, were also filmed with the same names. After her marriage her name was changed to Aarikepudi (Koduri) Kausalya Devi.
