The story of Devdas revolves around a feudal lord's son Devadas falling in love with a poor girl Parvati. Due to differences in their social and economic status, Devdas cannot marry his childhood love and Parvati marries an old man with children, who is Zamindar of Durgapur. Unable to forget her, Devdas becomes an alcoholic and is encouraged by his friend Bhagwan, who also introduces him to Chandramukhi, a prostitute. While Parvati settles in her new house, Devdas chooses the path of self destruction. On the advice of Chandramukhi Devdas leaves for his village but goes to Durgapur to keep promise he had made to Parvati that he visit her before his death. Devdas breathes his last in front of her house. Knowing this Parvati rushes to see him, but the door is closed by her family and she collapses. Thus it ends in a tragedy.
DEVADASU received positive reviews from critics upon its release and particularly the acting of Nageswara Rao and the music of C.R.Subburaman, which were the highlights apart from the direction of Vedantam Raghavaiah. The film proved to be the major breakthrough in Nageswara Rao's career. It made him known as the 'Tragedy King' of Telugu Cinema. Dilip Kumar, who portrayed Devdas in the 1955 film directed by Bimal Roy, admitted that Nageswara Rao's performance as the character was better than his own, remarking, " There is only one Devadas (1953), and that is Akkineni Nageswara Rao". In April 2013, CNN News 18 included this film in its list of 100 Greatest Indian films of all time, while celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema.
